Radnor rallies to down Cougars
Raider surge in 2nd half forces 3-way Central League tie
Phillylacrosse.com (5/11) - Ali Kelly scored off an 8-meter free position shot with eight minutes to play to cap a stunning comeback and lift host Radnor to an 8-7 victory over Springfield-Delco today in a Central League girls’ lacrosse game.
The decision will leave three teams – No. 1-ranked Springfield, No. 3 Radnor (17-1) and also No. 2 Strath Haven – as tri-champions of the Central League with 10-1 records. Strath Haven, which topped Penncrest, 12-5, today, had defeated Radnor last week.
The visiting Cougars (15-1), though, had a chance to win it outright after taking a qjuick 6-0 lead and then a 7-2 bulge on a goal by Courtney Kennedy (two goals) with 5:48 left in the first half. Radnor then held Springfield-Delco scoreless and began pecking away at the lead in the second half.
Kelyn Freedman (three goals) tied the game, 7-7, with 9:34 remaining on an 8-meter shot. Annie Woehling made seven saves for Radnor and Courtney Campbell also had three goals. Shannon Buns scored three to lead the Cougars and Val Paolucci scored twice.
“It was a tale of two halves and we dominated in the first half and then they dominated in the second half,” said Springfield-Delco coach Keith Broome. “We got all the draw controls early on and had the 6-0 lead. But we got a little complacent in the second half and they got all the draws and took the play away.”
