Christmas Decides to Not Play in 2009

Wings Press Release (12/5/08) - It was announced today that Philadelphia Wings transition player John Christmas will not play during the 2009 season. Christmas, a product of Lower Merion High School and the University of Virginia, has decided to take time off to establish LEAPS (Lacrosse, Education, Attitude, Perseverance, Success), which is a non-profit program designed to educate kids in inner city Philadelphia about the game of lacrosse and the importance of positive thinking.

“First and foremost I want everyone to know that I do have plans to come back and play indoor lacrosse and I hope that it is once again with the Wings,” said Christmas. “In the past six months I have put a lot of work into getting the LEAPS program off the ground and it is something that I want to be able to give my full attention so we can reach as many kids as possible in Philadelphia and really make a difference.”

Christmas was originally drafted by Philadelphia in the fifth round (49 overall) of the 2006 NLL Entry Draft. In his first three seasons with the Wings he played in 29 games, recorded 33 points (10G 23A), and picked up 115 loose balls.

“Although we are disappointed we understand and support John’s decision,” said Wings Head Coach Dave Huntley. “We wish him the very best and look forward to supporting his community initiatives with the LEAPS program.”
